Don’t Give up on Women in Technology.
Running and managing a tech company as a woman is not what you expect it to be. I have been cyber bullied, talked to as if I was just a “stupid girl” giving tech advise, and even received a few death threats from male clients who wanted to bully me into providing a service for free, reducing my prices to up to 80% off, and some who don’t want to hear tech advise from a woman. This has kept me wondering if I should run to police every time, or just quit the tech industry and opt for a safer or women friendly career. But how about the male bosses, clients and friends who have supported me over the years?
One thing I have learned for sure is persistence. Because I can’t give up on something I love and know how to do so well. This only means that society is right to believe that there are no women in technology and giving them the opportunity to dismiss us from tech roles based on our gender rather than our skills and abilities. We’re women, we’re feminine and therefore we have the most amazing gift of patience, persistence and kindness. These gifts give us an upper hand as far as managing and running tech companies is concerned. Therefore this year I intend to run my own company with fierceness and diligence and use my skills to the very best. This is Africa, we still have a long way to go and I can only play my part, and if I play it well, I might encourage a scared girl out there to do the same.
